ASO Optimization for an Educational Mobile App

Client
An early-stage EdTech startup with a passion for interactive learning. Their flagship mobile app offers gamified lessons in reading, math, and science for children aged 6 to 10.

Industry
Mobile Application/Education Technology

Project Overview

PWPlay partnered with the client to rework their App Store Optimization content and design. The previous assets lacked emotional appeal and failed to highlight the app’s educational value and fun factor. Our goal was to reposition the app in a highly competitive segment by combining clarity, trust, and creativity in both visuals and copywriting.

We began by analyzing competing apps and identifying the top-performing keywords in the category. We then created a new visual identity with illustrated screenshots, a fresh app icon, and localized text for five markets. Special care was taken to ensure everything remained playful, accessible, and aligned with App Store guidelines for apps targeting kids.

Challenge

The app had limited visibility in the Education category and suffered from low trust due to generic visuals that didn’t reflect its child-friendly features or learning outcomes.

Goals

Create visuals that speak to both children and parents Improve organic visibility with better keyword placement Increase conversion by building emotional connection and clarity

Old vs New Icon

Results

Increased Store Engagement – The new screenshots and app icon led to longer viewing time and higher interaction on the app’s store listing, capturing attention within the critical first few seconds.

Stronger Brand Perception – A cohesive design system — across icon, screenshots, and promo video — enhanced the app’s professional appearance and built greater user trust at first glance.

Improved Feature Comprehension – The promo video and captioned screenshots helped users quickly understand core features like progress tracking and learning paths, reducing drop-offs and setting accurate expectations.

Conclusion

This project showed how thoughtful ASO design and tailored messaging can dramatically improve the discoverability and user appeal of an educational app. By understanding the dual audience — both kids and their parents — PWPlay created a store experience that converted better, felt more trusted, and truly reflected the value of the app.
