3D Character Design for a Gaming Provider
Client
An indie game studio developing a turn-based mobile RPG, set in a magical world populated by elemental guardians, spellcasters, and beast-warriors. The studio needed visually rich characters that matched their stylized universe and could perform well on mobile.

Project Overview
The client approached PWPlay with an early prototype and moodboard. They needed five unique, playable characters โ each with distinct silhouettes, magical abilities, and personalities โ to serve as the core cast for their beta launch.
We were responsible for the full 3D character pipeline:
- Concept refinement
- Sculpting and topology
- Texturing and materials
- Game-ready rigging and basic animation loops
- Optimization for Unity and mobile performance
Each character had to maintain high visual fidelity without compromising performance โ particularly on mid-tier Android devices.
Challenges & Production Notes
- ๐งฉ Designing characters that were distinct yet part of the same world
- ๐น๏ธ Balancing visual detail with polygon and texture efficiency for real-time rendering
- ๐จ Translating 2D concept art into stylized yet readable 3D forms
- ๐ญ Ensuring characters could support idle animations, combat loops, and basic emotes
- ๐ Maintaining an open feedback loop with the client to adjust designs during development
We used ZBrush for high-poly sculpting, then retopologized in Blender and textured in Substance Painter. Models were tested in Unity using the clientโs base controller to ensure animation compatibility.
Results
๐ฎ Game-Ready Characters That Fit the Engine
Each model was delivered with rigging, animation-friendly topology, and Unity-compatible textures โ ready to plug into gameplay with minimal adjustment.
๐ง Strong, Recognizable Designs
Even at smaller mobile resolutions, every character retained a unique silhouette, color scheme, and visual identity โ aiding player recognition and long-term brand value.
๐จ Scalable Visual Style
We established a stylized art direction that could be applied to future characters, enemies, and NPCs โ giving the client a scalable visual base for continued development.
๐ Efficient Performance on Mid-Tier Devices
All models were optimized to remain under key polycount and texture size thresholds. This helped maintain frame rates across both Android and iOS targets.
